Lady Behind The Lens the "NaKeitha K Photography" blog
When I began the process of putting together my first photo project I wasn’t sure what I wanted to focus on. I researched other photo series/projects done by numerous photographers and I realized whatever their topic was they seemed to have somewhat of an attachment to it in some way. So I gave myself time. I took a few weeks and just let it come to me. That is when I found out toward the end of August that it was National Breastfeeding Awareness Month. I knew I wouldn’t be able to to get everything done to shoot in August because it was already nearing the end of the month by the time I had gotten my participants. So I just planned to shoot in September possibly October. As you can see October it was.. lol.
Now let me tell you a little bit of why I went with the choice to do a breastfeeding project. When I had my son, who is now five, I started off breastfeeding and it went well for few months. I was having trouble using the pump though and the only way I could produce milk was when my son was actually latching on. So storing milk for the days he was with his dad or once i went to work wasn’t very likely. However, before I got a chance to actually give up my son just decided he no longer wanted to nurse. I tried to keep it up but eventually gave in myself. What I can say in the time I did get to breastfeed him it was an experience you can never forget. To know that not only was your body the first home your child ever knew it was also the same source that fed him for the first time. It was just another way I saw to love my child. Obviously, you can see that connection I talked about other photographers having with their projects I had realized I had as well. So I planned and I reached out to mothers. I used Facebook as a great way to reach breastfeeding mothers and that is when I came across a group called Black Women Do Breastfeed. Just so happens all of my participants came from this beautiful community of mothers and they all had little boys like myself. I was so honored that they allowed me to be apart of their precious moments with their little ones and weren’t ashamed to show the world that we are mothers and breastfeeding is nothing to be ashamed of no matter where you may be at the moment. So to Chastity, Patrice and Anais I thank you and your little ones for being apart of this milestone in my photographic journey. You all are beautiful individuals and such wonderful mothers. Many Blessings, NaKeitha K "The Lady Behind The Lens"

I am super excited to be able to blog about this very special milestone. When I became a mother in 2009 I was a little reluctant toward breastfeeding. That didn't last long because my little one was such a natural. However, he soon showed me that he had a mind of his own. Yep! Sad to say he no longer wanted to breastfeed after about 2 months and the pump just would not work for me no matter how much I tried. So formula it was. I would always find myself saying how I wish I could have breastfed a little longer when speaking to mothers who were currently or did breastfeed their babies. So with October being Breast Cancer Awareness Month and August being National Breastfeeding Awareness Month I asked myself a question. How can I celebrate the tatas? lol... With that came LATCH ONTO LOVE (#LatchOntoLove). I joined a ton of support groups on Facebook for women who breastfeed and received a great response from one group in particular (Black Women Do Breastfeed). On October 26, 2014 I will be shooting with three beautiful mothers who ironically all have little boys like myself. I can't wait to share this series with you all.
Many Blessings, NaKeitha K "The Lady Behind The Lens" Now I shoot mostly outdoors using natural light. Other than my newborn shoot this session is one of the first indoor sessions I have had the pleasure of shooting. I was a bit nervous because I knew I had to set the bar a bit higher on this one; not that I don't give 100% to all my clients. I just knew the attention to detail needed to be even sharper. No pressure though right?! lol... I must say I was so pleased with the outcome of this session. These two are naturals at being in the spotlight though! Not to mention they are Uncle Ronnie and Auntie Glen to me so the good looks run in the family! Yep! Pastor Glenice is my mother's sister! I had such a good time just conversing and enjoying the confidence they had in my ability to capture a glimpse of The Glovers! Please be sure to stop by their website at http://www.fswcc.org and like their Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/fswcc?ref=br_tf
A great gift to celebrate being a mother and at a great price. This mini session isn't just for mothers with little ones. It is deal for your mother or another mom dear to you. For Booking: [email protected] I'm so excited to share this session with you all. This was my second attempt at photographing a newborn. First one was a little rushed and the baby wasn't in such a cheerful mood. A real eyeopener for me. So I planned this out a little better. I made sure I had more time to dedicate to diaper changes, fussy moments and feeding breaks. Surprisingly, all that I actually encountered with little miss Kierra was nothing her pretty purple pacifier couldn't calm. Kierra was wide awake for the beginning portion of the shoot and it was great to get some shots of her looking right at the camera. I also got quite a few frames of her famous fists pose. lol! Her mother and I just thought this was so hilarious. I knew I didn't want to do any naked shots so far so I requested that her mother pick out some cute bottoms and head bands. This sleeping beauty allowed us to change her 4 times without much of a fuss. This photographers dream baby I must say.
Well I hope you enjoy Kierra's newborn session. Please comment and be sure to sign my guest book. Visit me on Facebook the link is in the right hand corner of your screen and Instagram @NaKeithaK_Photography! Enjoy! Ok so this was my very fist time putting together a setup. I researched for weeks through different social networks. Pinterest was by far the biggest help. I took a few examples and headed straight to the craft store. I didn't want to overdue so I went in with the mind to keep it simple. I now know that I shop for props the same way I shop for my son. I put everything I think is cute in my basket, walk down the same isles a thousand times and then realize that I'm picking up the same item just in different colors/patterns. lol!! So needless to say I had to narrow down my choices drastically. I had already had my location in mind and I must say for my first set up I am very proud of myself. To say I'm looking forward to doing another setup would be an understatement. I CAN'T WAIT!
P.S.- Aren't Dorrian and little Ta'Niyah just the cutest things in their Easter best. So I always get excited for a shoot but this one was a little extra special. I was directed to this great graffiti location by Ryan over at Rolling Stock in Fort Lauderdale and I couldnt wait until the day it was time to shoot. RØYAL SØULS is a group of three young and passionate hip hop artist. Killa Tre (19), LuKeem (19) & Eris (20) came ready to work. The colors and artwork just popped with their personalities. Knowing each other since high school they were apart of a larger group called Poetic Justus, "That is where we originally grew as a family. It's a long story of why we parted ways and formed RØYAL SØULS but it was best... we have a goal and it will be achieved." I was intrigued by the name RØYAL SØULS and of course asked the meaning behind it and where they planned to take this vision they have. "It's more of a movement! It's people who are rich in spirit and rich in dreams. Rich in creativity and rich in confidence," explained Tre. "We're all royalty and we express our royalty with creative souls. Through Music!" I saw their vision and I was just happy to be apart of this new journey for them. I've always labeled music my first love and I gravitate to all genres. Granted I have favorites but music is so phenomenally diverse that you can't just listen to one type. These younsters are determined to leave their mark on this world and I'm just happy I got to help them kick in a door or two. "We want to be heard! We want our music to be inspiring to people and their everyday lives. This could go further than our imaginations could even fathom." www.soundcloud.com/r-yal-s-uls
This shoot was so near and dear to me. I was giving the privilege to capture sweet memories of my childhood friend Angie's first pregnancy. Angie and her Husband Adam are both apart of the U.S. Army. Hint the stylish jacket in the pic below!
:-) Angie and I talked for weeks about location, timing & the vision we both had for this shoot. We went shopping for clothing & I even made a midnight house stop to calm some pre photo jitters!! Hey nothing is too much for my clients!! Now I know you may be asking WHERE IS DAD?! Well, he was away in Korea proudly serving our country. I was so nervous about the outcome of the shoot. I really wanted him to like the photos. I wanted to make them proud! Since this shoot little Acari had made his grand entrance and is closing in on 4 months. Look out for updated photos!! Ok so this October my mother celebrated 48 yrs of life. For years now she's wanted all of her girls in one place at one time for this very reason, just a nice photo. I think it finally came together at the right time. This shoot was not only to celebrate her but for me it was a time to just be thankful for my family. My son comes from a line of women who no doubt love him and would do anything for him. Can't you tell?? :-) HAPPY BIRTHDAY MOMMY!!
I'm a Virgo! That means I critique myself ten times harder then I do others and Virgos can't help but critique others. It's what we do!! So when it comes to my work no one judges me harder than I do myself. It pushes me to work even harder on the next photo and the one after that. Any task at hand I want to put everything I have into it. I want to thank everyone who gave me an opportunity so far and trusted me to capture their vision through my work!! I don't know everything about photography. I'm self taught and I have a long way to go but know my passion is genuine. My will to succeed it strong. So again I say thank you! To my future clients, I can't wait to work with you and create magic!!
