Lady Behind The Lens the "NaKeitha K Photography" blog
When I began the process of putting together my first photo project I wasn’t sure what I wanted to focus on. I researched other photo series/projects done by numerous photographers and I realized whatever their topic was they seemed to have somewhat of an attachment to it in some way. So I gave myself time. I took a few weeks and just let it come to me. That is when I found out toward the end of August that it was National Breastfeeding Awareness Month. I knew I wouldn’t be able to to get everything done to shoot in August because it was already nearing the end of the month by the time I had gotten my participants. So I just planned to shoot in September possibly October. As you can see October it was.. lol.
Now let me tell you a little bit of why I went with the choice to do a breastfeeding project. When I had my son, who is now five, I started off breastfeeding and it went well for few months. I was having trouble using the pump though and the only way I could produce milk was when my son was actually latching on. So storing milk for the days he was with his dad or once i went to work wasn’t very likely. However, before I got a chance to actually give up my son just decided he no longer wanted to nurse. I tried to keep it up but eventually gave in myself. What I can say in the time I did get to breastfeed him it was an experience you can never forget. To know that not only was your body the first home your child ever knew it was also the same source that fed him for the first time. It was just another way I saw to love my child. Obviously, you can see that connection I talked about other photographers having with their projects I had realized I had as well. So I planned and I reached out to mothers. I used Facebook as a great way to reach breastfeeding mothers and that is when I came across a group called Black Women Do Breastfeed. Just so happens all of my participants came from this beautiful community of mothers and they all had little boys like myself. I was so honored that they allowed me to be apart of their precious moments with their little ones and weren’t ashamed to show the world that we are mothers and breastfeeding is nothing to be ashamed of no matter where you may be at the moment. So to Chastity, Patrice and Anais I thank you and your little ones for being apart of this milestone in my photographic journey. You all are beautiful individuals and such wonderful mothers. Many Blessings, NaKeitha K "The Lady Behind The Lens"
